Three Indeterminate Lines, 1992, Sculpture made from rolled steel.

The work by Bernar VENET (1941 - ) enjoys a privileged location in Albert Michallon Park. Placed on a raised up grassy area, the sculpture appears to be floating in space and gives an impression of weightlessness and flexibility that contradicts the material used to make it. The steel bars were shaped by the artist with the help of a metal worker in a workshop in the Vosges using a vice weighing more than 20 tons. Each time he creates a work, VENET literally enters into combat with the material and he doesn’t always come out the winner as twisting the steel bars is never entirely predictable. Organised in spirals, the three bars are inscribed into the landscape almost as if they were the author’s signature.

When he started out in the 1960s, Bernar VENET was influenced by the Nouveau Réalisme movement. He made black monochromes coated with tar, cardboard reliefs painted with gloss and “flying-sculptures” from charcoal and gravel. From 1966 on, he became the main representative of conceptual art in France, giving greater importance to conceiving the work than actually making it. In 1971, he stopped his artistic activity. He went back to his experimental works in 1976 and moved from the image of line to translating it into plywood, and finally defining it in space with the twisted steel bars entitled Indeterminate Lines.

This work was acquired by the Musée de Grenoble in 1999. The town of Grenoble has more than 150 works installed in public places that we invite you to discover thanks to several trails across the town and on the grenoble-patrimoine.fr website. These trails have been created with the help of the Département of Isère and the Auvergne-Rhône Alpes Regional Cultural Affairs Directorate.
